Are Security Camera Systems At Your Home Going Too Far?

More and more people decide to install security cameras at home. There are a number of people who think this really is taking things too far. They believe we are too obsessed with our personal security, and that cameras really don’t add anything to it. Is there something to be said for their ideas? That is actually an important question, but not one that has a very simple answer. Simply put, whether or not security cameras at home are overkill totally depends on your own situation. As always, there are pros and cons and you need to be aware of these. Let’s take a look at some of the things to consider.

First of all, we believe that having a camera will deter a burglar from coming in. Yes, burglars would prefer to rob a house that doesn’t have a camera, but what if that option isn’t there? A security camera is generally very easy to disable. All it really takes is cutting a wire, or covering the lens. As such, we could say that cameras give us a false sense of security. Then, people think that if something does happen in their home, they will have video evidence to identify the people who did it. However, only those who have followed all of the rules will have evidence that is admissible in court.

Some people suggest that what is actually happening is that manufacturers of security cameras tell us that we aren’t safe in our homes, so that they can earn big bucks on selling us cameras. Indeed, we are living in a George Orwell society, with Big Brother watching our every move. At the same time, however, we also shouldn’t be deluded into thinking that our society is actually without crime. As such, could the truth be that we only need security cameras in certain homes? For instance, if you live in an apartment, you may want to make sure that you are able to see who is at the door downstairs before you let them in. Similarly, those who live in very expensive and exclusive homes want to make sure they can keep common people out. Or perhaps you live in a very poor and deprived area of town. Putting up cameras here may just allow you to help the community as a whole. In poorer neighborhoods, gang-related activity and other street crime could go down if you have cameras installed. This really demonstrates how there is no clear-cut answer to the question of whether or not you should install home security cameras.
